ART CLASS: “SOAP SCULPTING – HAND SIGNS”

On May 5th, 2026, at the Center for Research and Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (CED), students from the STEM class participated in an Art session themed “Soap Sculpting – Hand Signs.”

Have you ever thought that an ordinary, everyday bar of soap could turn into a work of sculpture? The STEM students at CED did just that in their Art class! Behind those tiny, delicate pieces of art is a whole journey of dedicated learning and effort by our students. Through this session, they have learned:

Basic Sculpting Techniques: Students received meticulous guidance from their teachers at every step—from observing and sketching designs on paper to choosing the right soap bar, selecting the optimal surface, and mastering the carving tool to create smooth shapes without breaking the base material.

Cultivating Patience: This hands-on activity fosters high concentration, patience, and dexterity, empowering students to confidently express their unique creativity.

Awakening Aesthetics and Confidence: Every carve and every falling soap flake represents a moment of perseverance as the students stayed true to their ideas, proudly creating a deeply personal masterpiece. The true magic lies in how perfectly and accurately they replicated the sign language handshapes - just like the way they use them to connect with the world around them.

Looking at the lovely hand models lined up on the table, our teachers truly feel that these small creations hold immense joy. It is a profound pride in the culture of connection - where the students' language is cherished and celebrated through a deeply creative artistic lens.
