ONLINE CONSULTATION - DEVELOPING SPEAKING LANGUAGE FOR A CHILD WITH HEARING LOSS

On December 14, 2021, Ms. Duong Phuong Hanh - Director of CED consulted online for the parents of a child with hearing loss living in Norway, in order to help her increasing her pronunciation ability.

The consultation was conducted through following steps:

Finding information related to the child:

- Age, hearing age, listening-speaking capacity at the current time.

- Her study at school, the role of teachers, personal educational program,…

- The teaching at home of parents: time, activities, concerns,…

- The child’s interaction with others, relatives and neighbours.

From information about the child provided by her parents, the intervention solution is as following:

- The child needs to be checked about her pronunciation system, pronunciation mechanism (because she has some problem with her facial muscle), in order to find out influences to her pronunciation (if possible) for knowing whether the therapy activities are need for children with pronunciation problem.

- Parents need to create an active listening environment in order for the child to like sound, especially emphasize on the up-and-down rhymths of the speaking words, singing, learn to play and play to learn.

- Recheck the stages: recognizing sound, differentiating totally different sounds, two similar sounds and finally, being able to do complex commands. Teaching children can be integrated and alternated with the above activities, depending on the difficult levels of the vocabulary.

The parents are also encouraged to update information about the child’s progress so that she is supported in planning next steps for her language development.
