DRAWING SESSION – A KITTEN

On December 29, 2022, the Center for Research and Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (CED) had a meaningful drawing lesson for students with hearing loss.

The topic for preparatory class and STEM class was: a kitten. This was a familiar image and very close to those who love animals.

At first, the teacher showed the students a drawing that she had drawn. Through close and detailed observation, she could guide the basic lines for students to shape and adjust the size to fit the A4 paper frame. Due to the one-on-one tutoring and guidance, she could talk directly with the students about the image recognition, through which she also developed more thinking in communicating with children when talking about what the cat would like to eat. One answer was the cat would like to eat rice, the cat would like to catch mice and eat mice and another answer was the cat would like to eat fish. From those answers, she would guide the students to draw more pictures of their favorite food. Particularly for STEM students, to show the variety of drawings, she allowed them to search for pictures on the internet for reference.

This can be seen as an innovation in her communication method with the children, instead of drawing a uniform and imposing image that would cause a feeling of constriction and framework for the students.
