QUARTER I ACTIVITY REPORT

1. Education and Training

For students with hearing loss:

CED operates three classes, following the standard general education curriculum, for 23 deaf and hard of hearing students and learners aged 5 to 24. In addition to the four core skills—speaking, listening, reading, and writing—CED students also study art, STEM, basic cooking, and life skills, and participate in external social interaction activities.

For Trainees/learners without hearing loss:

-      52 students majoring in Speech Therapy from the Faculty of Rehabilitation at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City, as well as the Universities of Medical Technology in Da Nang and Hai Duong, completed three specialized modules offered by CED: Sign Language, Key Word Sign, and Speech-Reading.

-      30 trainees—comprising 12 professionals working in the fields of Education, Healthcare, Social Work, Business, Media, and the Arts, along with 18 university and high school students—participated in a "Communication Skills with people with hearing loss" course organized by CED.

 

2. Consultation and Counseling

During Quarter I, CED provided a total number of consultation and counseling sessions related to the field of hearing loss, as follows:

- January 2026: 22 sessions (out of a total of 90 consultations) focused on supporting students with hearing loss within inclusive education settings; guiding volunteers and hard of hearing student interns; counseling on the development of social communication skills; providing peer counseling and psychological support; and guiding parents through the process of preparing scholarship application dossiers.

- February 2026: 12 out of 35 consultation sessions covering topics such as: education and the development of communication and social skills for deaf and hard-of-hearing youth; peer counseling; and guiding deaf youth through the process of completing legal documentation. CED observed a two-week Lunar New Year holiday during this month.

- March 2026: 30 out of 79 consultation sessions covering topics such as: preparatory education for children entering Grade 1; education for deaf adults who have not previously attended school; career guidance; communication skills; social skills; peer counseling; psychological counseling; assistance and guidance with legal documentation; and hearing aid support.

 

3. Enhancing Competencies and Life Skills for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing

The CED Center regularly organizes extracurricular activities and social gatherings covering a diverse range of topics aimed at enhancing competencies and cultivating life skills for its deaf and hard-of-hearing students. During the first quarter of 2026, CED carried out the following extracurricular activities:

-    Movie Screenings: Featuring content designed to help students gain a deeper understanding of life, foster a spirit of intellectual curiosity, and appreciate the values ​​of intelligence and friendship.

-    Exploration of Vietnamese and International History and Traditional Culture: Students participated in various programs such as "Hello 2026 – Spring” "Family Activities on New Year Days", "International Day of Happiness," and others.

-    Arts and Crafts Activities:

+ Making New Year greeting cards.

+ Making scented candles and coasters.

+ Making handmade notebooks and bookmarks.

-    Skills-Building Activities: CED students participated in

+ "Quizzes, artistic performances (singing and dancing), New Year greetings, and the exchange of *li xi* (lucky money)." Students were also guided in writing their "2026 Spring Excursion Diaries."

+ Group games: a jigsaw puzzle relay race and a hands-on crafting activity.

+ The “Happiness in Bloom” activity, featuring two games: “The Mystery Box” (spreading positive emotions) and “The Happiness Tree” (cherishing life’s simple pleasures). Through these simple activities, students can realize that happiness is always present in the smallest details of life—provided we take a moment to pause, feel, and appreciate it.

+ A STEM session themed “Crafting Herbal Balm” designed not only to cultivate meticulousness, concentration, teamwork, and problem-solving skills, but also to ensure equitable access to education for hearing-impaired children.

  • Interactions:

+ With two Deaf artists visiting CED: Despite differences in language and nationality, it was a shared passion for the arts and genuine sincerity that brought everyone closer together.

+ With international students Humphrey Kaylia Na'marie (majoring in Anthropology, Global Health, and Environment) and Trivedi Ahan Jigish (majoring in Engineering), who visited to converse and learn about CED’s operational model, mission, as well as its past and current activities and projects.

 

4.  Consultation and Provision of Data and Knowledge for Research and Graduation Theses in the Field of Hearing loss

CED has conducted working sessions and provided in-depth feedback regarding the field of hearing impairment to various student groups:

-      January 2026: A group of four students majoring in Artificial Intelligence at FPT University undertook their graduation thesis on the topic of “Continuous Sign Language Recognition” (based on deep learning models). Concurrently, CED shared a dataset comprising 827 video clips demonstrating Basic Sign Language (covering 659 vocabulary words and 168 conversational sentences) to support the group in executing their research project.

-      March 2026:

+ Hosted two international students—majoring in Anthropology, Global Health and Environment, and Engineering—for a visit to CED. The students engaged in discussions to gain insights into CED’s operational model, mission, as well as its past and current activities and projects.

+ Provided consultation to a group of four students from RMIT University Vietnam regarding the significance and potential impact of their technology project, titled “Designing an Application to Developing Auditory Skills through Visual Cues” on the hearing-impaired community. This project served as the group’s entry for the “AI ​​Ready ASEAN Youth Challenge” competition.

+ Mentored one student majoring in Graphic Design at Hoa Sen University in the execution of their graduation project, themed “Designing a Brand Identity System for a Social Organization: The CED Center.”

 

5. Guidance on Sign Language Interpretation for Performance Programs

-      Instructed a teacher working at an international school on how to teach her grade-1-students the sign language interpretation for the song “We Are the World.”

-      Mentored a student from the School of Theater and Cinema (Department of Film and Television Directing) in performing sign language interpretation for 11 lines of dialogue within a non-profit short film; this project served as the student’s final-semester examination assignment.

 

6. Supervising students in Social Work, Educational Psychology, and other disciplines during their field internships within the field of hearing loss:

-      Supervising one hard of hearing student majoring in Graphic Design at Saigon Polytechnic College during her graduation internship (January – April 2026).

-      Supervising two students majoring in Educational Psychology at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities during their volunteer placement at CED (January – February 2026).

-      Supervising five students majoring in Educational Psychology at Ho Chi Minh City University of Pedagogy during their graduation internship (February – May 2026).

-      Supervising six third-year students majoring in Social Work at Ho Chi Minh City Open University during their internship for the "Individual and Group Social Work" module (March – May 2026).
