TRAINING PROGRAM: THE COURSE 78 OF SKILLS IN COMMUNICATION WITH PEOPLE WITH HEARING LOSS (SESSION 9)
On August 9, 2026, the Center for Research and Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (CED) organized Session 9 of the Communication Skills with Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing People – Course 78, taught by Ms. Duong Phuong Hanh, Director of CED. The class consisted of 29 learners, including 17 people working in the fields of Education, Healthcare, Marketing, Business, and Tourism, as well as 12 students and school pupils.
In Session 9, the learners reviewed how to sign “The Bus” before moving on to a new and interesting topic: Lip-Reading.
During this session, the learners were given the opportunity to:
- Experience lip-reading, thereby understanding the importance of observing lip movements when communicating with deaf and hard-of-hearing people. The learners observed the teacher’s lip movements through words with one syllable, two syllables, and so on, such as “eat,” “drink,” “run,” “happy,” and “study.”
- Practice analyzing important characteristics involved in developing lip-reading skills among deaf and hard-of-hearing people.
- Analyze factors that influence the ability to read lip-reading cues among deaf and hard-of-hearing people.
At the end of the session, the teacher asked the learners to review and practice together through a lip-reading activity. The learners observed their partner’s mouth movements, identified the content being communicated, and practiced repeating it as a complete sentence.
Sign language is one of two themes in the training program on Skills in Communication with People with Hearing Loss (Deaf, Hard of Hearing, Late-Deafened). The second theme is lip-reading.
