ART CLASS: CREATING “TONGUE-POPPING TOYS” LETS STUDENTS LEARN THROUGH PLAY

On May 28, 2025, elementary students at the Center for Research and Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (CED) had a wonderfully engaging art lesson with the theme “Creating Tongue-Popping Toys”. The activity not only sparked imagination but also incorporated blowing exercises – a method that helps strengthen breath control and airflow regulation, especially beneficial for deaf or hard-of-hearing students.

Using simple materials like colored paper, straws, and tape, the students crafted adorable toys: from frogs and dragons to funny cartoon faces that “stick out their tongues” when blown. Laughter filled the classroom as the children excitedly competed to see who could blow stronger and more evenly, making their toy tongues pop out farther.

Through this activity, students were able to practice fine motor skills while also exercising their breath – an essential component in communication for deaf students. In addition, they learned about material recycling, creative thinking, and teamwork.
